ABOUT THE PUBLISHERS: KRYSTA GIBSON AND RHONDA DICKSION
In 1985 Krysta Gibson quit her job in Point Roberts, Washington and moved to Seattle where she started the newspaper, The New Times. She didn’t know anyone in Seattle at the time, didn’t have much background in journalism, had never published a newspaper, and didn’t have any start-up funds.

What she did have was a vision. She was following inner guidance and even though it was a very difficult project she persevered. People showed up who believed in what she was trying to do and supported her in many seen and unseen ways.

At that time, there were a lot of people who thought anything to do with “alternative” spiritual ideas was the work of the devil. The general public didn’t know about feng shui, bodywork or energy work, and holistic healing was seen in a very poor light. The words “New Age” and “New Thought” were bad words to many people. Krysta came under attack from some people and enjoyed tremendous
support from others.

A few years into the project, Rhonda Dicksion joined the team and brought with her years of experience in graphics. As a newspaper design professional, she has won numerous awards in Washington State graphics competitions.

With her additional experience as a syndicated cartoonist and published author, Rhonda helped the newspaper become more professional in its appearance and began writing music reviews and interviews.

As the community grew, so did The New Times until in 1995 the publication had a reader base of over 40,000 and was seen as the premiere publication of the alternative spiritual community in the Puget Sound area. Interviews with Wayne Dyer, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, John and Jan Price, Kryon, and other leading-edge thinkers graced the pages of the newspaper monthly. Krysta and Rhonda felt humbled and satisfied to have been instrumental in the growth of the community in the Puget Sound area.

Eventually, it was time to pass the baton to someone else and The New Times was sold in 1996. Krysta continued to study and to learn and to write, and began a career in working with older adults. She managed an assisted living community for several years. She eventually took the position of executive director of a senior center. Rhonda became the production manager at a weekly newspaper and began a web design business.

From time to time, Krysta received telephone calls asking her if she would consider starting another publication. People said they missed The New Times and the local community flavor it had provided for so long.  After much soul-searching and talking to many people, Krysta and Rhonda decided to start a new publication.

New Spirit Journal (and this website) are the result.
